Educational Visits at Hazel Brow Farm

Educational visits at Hazel Brow Farm offer hands-on, meaningful learning experiences in the setting of a real working farm in the heart of Swaledale. We welcome schools, home education groups, colleges, youth groups and other educational organisations, giving young people the opportunity to learn outside the classroom and experience farming and the countryside first-hand.

Every visit can be tailored to suit the age, ability, interests and learning needs of your group. We are happy to work with teachers and group leaders beforehand to develop a session around particular curriculum topics, learning outcomes or areas of interest.

Sessions can explore a wide variety of subjects including food and farming, livestock and animal care, habitats and biodiversity, traditional hay meadows, conservation, farming with nature, sustainability, soils, rivers and water, rural heritage, land management and traditional countryside skills. Where appropriate, activities can be linked directly to areas of the UK curriculum.

We can also place a greater emphasis on careers and employability, introducing young people to the wide variety of opportunities available within agriculture and the wider rural sector. This can include farming, animal care, conservation, land management, agricultural engineering and other countryside careers, as well as exploring the practical and transferable skills these industries require. If there is a particular subject or career your group would like to concentrate on, please let us know – we are always happy to discuss ideas and create something relevant to your learners.

Visits are designed to be practical and engaging wherever possible. Depending on your chosen programme and the time of year, this might include meeting and caring for livestock, exploring our meadows and habitats, learning about where food comes from, discovering how a working farm changes through the seasons, trying practical activities and investigating the relationship between farming, food production and nature.

We understand that every group is different. Activities can be adapted for different ages, abilities and additional needs, and our aim is to provide a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone has the opportunity to participate, build confidence, develop new skills and learn at their own pace.

School Outreach

If bringing your group to Hazel Brow isn’t practical, we may also be able to bring Hazel Brow Farm to you!

We can provide outreach sessions to schools and educational settings within a reasonable travelling distance of Hazel Brow Farm. Sessions can be developed around your curriculum, a particular farming or countryside topic, careers education or the needs and interests of your learners.

Booking & Funded Visits

Educational visits can be booked online; however, we recommend contacting us before booking so we can discuss your group’s requirements and make sure your visit is designed around what you would most like to achieve.

Funded visits may be available for educational groups with young people aged 5–18, subject to eligibility and current funding availability.

To help us ensure your visit is safe, suitable and tailored to your group, we ask that a member of staff who will be accompanying the group attends a short preliminary visit to Hazel Brow Farm before your booked session.
